25 Last-Minute Tips for an Open House

1.          House should smell good, but not overpowering; air out ½ hour before showing. Open windows in the spring.


2.          Open blinds, drapes, and curtains to the outside world, especially the front of the house (make sure windows are clean).


3.          Light fireplace.


4.          Take pets away for the day.


5.          Neutralize cigarette or pipe smell.


6.          Place fresh flowers at the entrance and on the kitchen table.


7.          Open a recipe book in the kitchen.


8.          Open a book in the bedroom on the bed or in a favorite reading spot.


9.          Do a quickie wipe of all surfaces with Clorox wipes: kitchen, bath, toilet, and sinks.


10.      Dry out sinks with paper towels.


11.      Keep temperature at a comfortable level: cold days, warm and cozy; hot days, crisp and cool.


12.      Take cars out of the garage (shows space).


13.      Hide dirty dishes in the stove.


14.      Turn lights on in every room.


15.      Play music on low: soothing and pleasant.


16.      Vacate house while showing if possible.


17.      Place clean hand towel and guest soap in bathrooms.


18.      Place clean bath towels in bathrooms.


19.      Hide dirty clothes in dryer and washer.


20.      Plump pillows.


21.      Fold blankets and throws.


22.      Stack papers neatly.


23.      Use a quickie sweeper.


24.      Take toys off the front yard.


25.      Sweep the front walk.
